You glance at your aquarium thermometer and do a double-take. The room feels uncomfortably warm, the weather forecast promises another few days of soaring temperatures, and your reef tank has climbed to 28°C (82°F). Sound familiar?

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense across many parts of the world as our climate changes, and unusually hot weather is becoming something reef keepers have to prepare for rather than simply hope to avoid.

While coral reefs naturally exist in warm tropical waters, your aquarium is a very different environment. In the wild, reefs stretch for miles, with huge volumes of water helping to stabilise temperature. Fish can swim into deeper, cooler water, and ocean currents constantly bring fresh, oxygen-rich water across the reef. In your home aquarium, none of those natural safety nets exist.

The good news? A heatwave doesn't have to become a disaster. Understanding how heat affects your reef tank and knowing how to respond before things become critical can make all the difference.

Whether this is your first summer as a reef keeper or you've been in the hobby for years, here's everything you need to know to keep your reef tank cool during a heatwave.


Why Heatwaves Are More Dangerous Than You Realize

Most hobbyists, when they think of hot weather, think of one thing, and one thing only: temperature. But surprisingly, temperature is only part of the picture.

As water warms, it physically contains less dissolved oxygen. At the same time, your fish, corals, and beneficial bacteria all require more oxygen as their metabolism increases in warmer conditions.

It’s like asking someone to run a marathon and giving them less air to run it in. That’s why fish often begin gasping at the surface in a heat wave. They're not necessarily reacting to the temperature itself; they're struggling because oxygen levels are dropping.

 

 

Your aquarium is also much smaller than the ocean. A few hours of direct sunlight, a warm room, or several pieces of equipment generating heat can raise the temperature surprisingly quickly. Live rock, sand, glass, and even your aquarium cabinet absorb that heat and continue releasing it into the water long after the sun has gone down.

It's a perfect storm that can quickly turn stressful for your livestock if left unchecked.


What’s the ideal temperature for a reef tank?

Most reef aquariums do well at temperatures of 24–26°C (75–79°F), though many successful systems are naturally a degree or so either side of this.

It’s not about hitting a particular number; you want to keep things steady. A gradual rise to 27 to 28°C on a very hot day is often much less stressful than a sudden drop from 29°C to 25°C after aggressive cooling.

Corals are as sensitive to quick temperature changes as they are to too much heat.


 

As a rough guide:

  • 24-26°C (75-79°F): Optimal working temperature

  • 27–28°C (81-82°F): Keep a close watch on the temperature and start cooling measures if needed

  • 29°C (84°F): Livestock may show signs of heat stress. Increase cooling and ventilation

  • 30°C+ (86°F+): Take action now to prevent further increases


Every reef is different, but preventing temperatures from continuing to climb is usually more important than trying to cool the tank as quickly as possible.

Thankfully, you don’t have to buy expensive equipment right away. Often, a few minor changes can bring your aquarium temperature down several degrees.


Enhance Surface Evaporation

If there is one piece of advice that almost every seasoned reef keeper would agree on, it is this: use a cooling fan.

This naturally draws heat out of the aquarium. If you put a fan on the surface of the water, this greatly increases the evaporation. It's easy, cheap, and wonderfully effective.

The downside is increased evaporation, so you will have to top off the water lost to evaporation with fresh RO/DI water to maintain salinity. If you have an automatic top-off system, this becomes almost painless.


Improve oxygen exchange 

Thankfully, you don’t have to buy expensive equipment right away. Remember, in a heatwave it’s often oxygen that is the big problem.

Point powerheads slightly towards the surface to create a gentle agitation, keep your protein skimmer running efficiently, and do not restrict airflow around your aquarium.

If the weather is very hot, you can temporarily add an extra wavemaker to help improve gas exchange.


Keep the Room Cool

Sometimes it's easier to cool the room than the aquarium

Close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day to stop direct sunlight heating the room. Open windows when the outside air becomes cooler in the evening, and if you have air conditioning, use it to keep the room at a stable temperature.

It's also worth checking that your aquarium isn't positioned next to radiators, south-facing windows or other heat sources.


Reduce Heat from lighting

Modern LED lighting is much cooler than the old metal halide systems but still adds heat.

In a heatwave, you can safely:

  • Cut back on your lighting period by an hour or two

  • If your corals look healthy, back off the intensity a little

  • Adjust your lighting schedule to have the lights come on later in the evening after the ambient temperature has fallen

Most corals can survive a few days of reduced lighting, but they can certainly suffer from prolonged overheating. 


Improve Airflow Around the Sump

Many reef keepers overlook their sump.

If it's enclosed inside a cabinet, warm air can become trapped around pumps, skimmers, and return equipment, gradually heating the entire system.

Opening cabinet doors or improving ventilation can make a surprising difference, especially on larger aquariums.


Should You Buy an Aquarium Chiller?

If your reef regularly reaches dangerous temperatures every summer, an aquarium chiller may be one of the best investments you can make.

Unlike fans, which rely on evaporation, chillers actively cool the water and maintain a precise temperature regardless of the weather outside.


They're particularly worthwhile for:

  • SPS-dominated reef systems

  • Large aquariums

  • Homes that consistently become very warm

  • Aquariums located in conservatories or loft conversions


While they're a bigger investment upfront, many reef keepers consider them cheap insurance compared to replacing valuable livestock.


Emergency Heatwave Tips

If you suddenly discover your reef tank is approaching 30°C, don't panic. Instead, work through the situation methodically.

Increase surface agitation, switch on cooling fans, reduce unnecessary lighting, and stop any equipment that produces excess heat if it's safe to do so.

If temperatures continue rising, sealed bottles filled with cold RO/DI water can be floated in the sump to gently reduce the temperature.

Notice the word gently.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to cool the tank too quickly. Corals and fish generally cope better with a slow rise in temperature than a dramatic drop over the course of an hour.

Avoid adding ice cubes directly into your aquarium, especially if they're made from tap water. Not only can they cool the tank too rapidly, but they may also introduce unwanted contaminants.


Common Heatwave Mistakes

Even seasoned reef keepers can make bad choices when temperatures soar.

Here are some of the more common:

  • Turning off all equipment regardless of oxygen levels

  • Forgetting about water evaporation and salinity increasing

  • Feeding heavily when fish are under stress

  • Let the animals show distress before you take any action

  • Cooling the aquarium too fast


A little bit of preparation is worth more than last-minute panic.


Your Summer Reef Tank Checklist

Before the next heatwave arrives, spend a few minutes checking your system.

 

 

✔ Test your thermometer for accuracy

✔ Make sure your heater switches off correctly

✔ Clean cooling fans and ventilation grills

✔ Check your automatic top-off is working properly

✔ Keep plenty of RO/DI water ready

✔ Ensure pumps and wavemakers are clean and operating efficiently

✔ Monitor your tank temperature during the hottest part of the day, not just in the morning

 

These small checks can prevent major problems later!
